The Casino and Women’s Gambling
The casino, in its modern form, is like a giant indoor amusement park for adults. Musical shows, lighted fountains and themed hotels all help draw in the crowds. But the bottom line is that casinos make their money through gambling and games of chance. Slot machines, blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat and other games provide the billions of dollars in profits that casinos pull in every year.
Most casinos are staffed with highly trained personnel to keep the games running as they should. Dealers and table managers are heavily focused on their own game, able to spot blatant cheating such as palming or marking cards or dice. They also keep tabs on the overall performance of their tables, noting whether a large percentage of patrons are winning or losing. Elaborate surveillance systems allow casino employees to watch the entire floor from a room filled with banks of security monitors. Cameras in the ceiling are positioned to cover every table, window and doorway, and can be adjusted to focus on suspicious patrons by casino security personnel.
A recent study by Harrah’s Entertainment found that the average casino gambler is a forty-six-year-old female from a household with above-average income. Traditionally, women have dominated the casino gaming business, especially in the state of Nevada. Women tend to prefer table games like poker and blackjack, where they can interact with other players and make decisions on their own. They also tend to prefer high-stakes games like craps and roulette, which offer greater opportunities for winning big.
